about

Growth 2 came shortly after the first one, although a completely new composition it seemed to resonate with the first one and on another recent walk in my local park I noticed that one of the trees had a very tiny branch growing and on this very delicate and infantile branch were some rather large leaves already, also this was Autumn and while most leaves were dying these leaves were very green & luscious. I took a photo and some days later a new piece of music began to emerge.

On this occasion the process was a little different. I started off late one night with the first improvised piano section that arrives later in the piece, I saved it and returned the following day. I knew it needed something as a foundation, i played around with some ambient chords on the Prophet rev2 editing the sounds, strangely the first piece I played seemed to compliment the piano musically and in tone.

I then felt it needed something to bring more dynamic range and a further feeling, something that wasn't quite of this world or mysterious, further editing of some bell like tones and some extreme filtering and playing similar notes that matched the piano passage but at much higher octaves.

I had this feeling that the piece would need something that swells and grows at some point in the track, I created a modulated drone with some shifting of keys but processed the sound further with some subtle overdrive & volume and rising reverb etc at perhaps the three quarter point in the album.

I also turned to the Moog Grandmother and created a three oscillator pad patch with a haunting quality where I played another improvised section which arrives later, towards the end a new piano piece emerges a mixture of chords and individual notes along with some additional synth elements to gently wrap it up in a new direction to perhaps reflect a change a new life emerging in an unexpected place or way.
