about

Its a beautiful weekend in late August 2020, I'm trying to relax
with some quiet peaceful music after a busy week at work.

My neighbours have other plans, to continue working on their new back garden patio, so the sound of a con-saw cutting through concrete has now become the soundtrack to this beautiful August weekend.

Not to let it ruin my weekend I decided to record the sounds emanating from the ongoing construction site with my zoom H1, I figured it may come in useful at some point.

A few days later, all is quiet and I decide to import and listen to the grinding and cutting of concrete. I drop the sound file into the sampler in Ableton and play around with loop points and pitches, filter etc, I find a pleasing sustained drone-like quality in a chord and the foundations were set for a possible new piece.

I started off playing some string like sounds on the Moog Grandmother.

Some more editing on the Moog Grandmother and I created a rather classic sounding Moog bass, patching the mod section into the noise generator to create a third oscillator, with a nice sustain and subtle sweeping filtering to add some movement on each note, I improvised a section and recorded it, I then pitched the midi up by 12 notes and had the Moog play the same section and then overdubbed the two parts to make a larger two note six oscillator Moog soundscape.

The prophet Rev2 is used for some polyphonic pad/string like sections.

From this point I edited and multi racked the Moog some more, creating various alien like modulated sounds that appear through out the track. The MS20 produced the almost creepy bird like sound that drifts in & out as the piece progresses.

Overall the track has a fairly dark ominous tone and feel. From about the thirty three minute mark a new Moog lead enters and adds a shift in mood somewhat which I felt was needed to make the track work over its almost sixty minute duration.

I hope this piece conjures places & spaces in your imagination and
gives you an hour of pure escapism to enjoy.
